Your letter should be properly layed out, short and to the point, and should include some if not all of the following:

• Name
• Date of the letter
• Employee ID number (If you have one)
• Years of service
• Official date of retirement
• Admitting that all employer assets have been returned
• A forwarding address

You may even inform your employers if you are deciding to continue to pay any form of medical or life insurance contributions, this is not needed in the UK.

Remember to keep your letter clear and neat, don't write a long rambling note where the information is hard to find, use short paragraphs and let each paragraph contain one relevant piece of information.  Keep a copy of your letter for yourself on file in case your official one goes missing, hey we all know what the internal mail and filing systems are like !
